Generals Win Little Caesars Patrick Division

Generals Beat Stars and Bring the Division Banner Home to Brighton

The Generals beat the Garden City Stars (6-3) in the Little Caesars Patrick Division finals in Southfield on February 28.

It was a rough start for the Generals when the Stars jumped out to a (1-0) lead. The early lead was not long lived though as assistant captain Aaron Meredith knotted up the game (1-1) on his unassisted goal, and Wes Sallee put the Generals ahead (2-1) to end the first period. Phil Caris extended the lead to (3-1) putting in the first of his three goals. Garden City would not go away however and the Stars put in 2 second period goals to tie the game (3-3) with 15 minutes to go.
Tightening up the defense, the Generals pitched a third period shutout. Defenseman Hugh Comben put the Generals ahead to stay with an unassisted goal halfway through the third period. Making sure the game would stay in the hands of the Generals, Phil Caris scored two more goals (one an open netter) to ensure a Generals victory and giving him his second hat trick in two consecutive games.
The game was a chippy affair at the end as the Stars became frustrated watching their season come to an unsuccessful end. Co-captain Anthony Rechul received a vicious slash with 5:43 left in the game, and the refs would run the clock down to zero after the cross check from behind Brooks Robertson received with :43 left to go in the game.
The win was a great victory for the Kensington Valley Hockey Association as the Generals and the Cavalry would win 2 of the 4 Little Caesars playoff divisions.
The Generals will play in the house playoffs to finish a very successful 2009-2010 campaign.

Generals win Five Straight to take Third Tourney

The Generals played in the Rock and Roll Cup Tournament this past February 12, 13 and 14 in Cleveland Ohio.
The Generals came out as they have in the past two tournament victories with impressive wins over the Casenovia Park Chiefs from Buffalo New York (9-0) and the Erie Lions from Erie Ohio (4-0). The third game proved to be a crucial game as the Generals played a determined and physical Elyria Ohio Panthers team to a 5-3 victory setting the stage for the semi-finals.
In the semifinals the Generals faced off with their fellow association team the Destroyers to determine who would go on to the finals. Again in a very tough and physical Kensington Valley style hockey game, it was the Generals that came out on top 4-1 to represent Kensington Valley hockey in the finals against the Grosse Isle Islanders.
The finals were played in downtown Cleveland on Olympic Ice at the Cleveland Heights Community Arena Sunday afternoon. The game started out very physical with Grosse Isle checking at every opportunity. However it was the Generals that drew blood first with a point shot from defenseman Jack Bauer. Bauer’s shot was a textbook low slapper that skimmed the surface of the ice hitting 2 Islanders sticks and getting redirected into the net passing the dumbfounded goal tender. The Generals struck again in the first with a goal from Phil Caris making it a 2-0 start.
The Islanders did not give up though as they made a determined effort in the second period to score. With a scrum in front of the Generals net, a lucky Islander put the puck pass a screened Andrew Lennox and the score was 2-1 putting the Islanders in a position to tie the game.
The Islanders would never get that chance though as the Generals picked up the hitting making the Islanders pay every time they entered the offensive zone. Jack Bauer, Brendan Morrison, Hugh Comben and Jacob Weakland put on a checking clinic that would test the Islanders resolve every time they entered Generals territory.
Putting a nail in the coffin of the Islanders hopes late in the third period, Hugh Comben took the puck into the offensive zone, and using the retreating Islanders defense as a screen, wristed a shot pass the extremely unnerved goalie to make the final score 3-1.
Goal tending was key as both net minders for the Generals posted shut outs and held the opposing teams to only 5 goals in 5 games. Goalie Conner McCarthy was perfect posting a shut out and only allowing 3 goals in 2 games, as was Co-captain Andrew Lennox who posted a shut out and allowed only 2 goals in 3 games.
Tournament MVP was Jacob Weakland who was honored for his tenacious play in the neutral and offensive zones and for taking on players of any size when they carried the puck.
Honorable mention goes to Phil Caris who continued his game winning goal streak putting in the game winning goal 4 out of the 5 games played in the tournament. Honorable mention goes to assistant captain Aaron Meredith who had a stunning 7 points in the first game against the Chiefs and 11 points overall.
The Generals close out the 2009-2010 season with the second round of playoffs for Little Caesars, the games at Yost and Munn, and house playoffs in March.

Generals Beat Canada for Motown Cup Victory

Only 15 Seconds Used in Overtime to Send Ducks to Canada Empty Handed

For the second time this season the Generals hoist the cup in dramatic fashion, this time beating a team from Toronto to win the Motown Cup in Melvindale January 29, 30 and 31.
The Generals played tough hockey for the tourney beating a good Livonia Predator team 6-1, and a team from Guelph Canada 9-0. The going got tough when the Generals ran in to the Toronto Ducks for game 3.
In a very evenly matched game 3, the Ducks got the upper hand by beating the Generals on Sunday morning 2-1 in a game that could have gone either way. The Ducks passing and speed were a good match for the Generals tough physical play and good puck movement. Both teams ended up with 2 wins and 1 loss. However, a team from Plymouth had 3 wins and it looked like the Generals were out. The team from Plymouth backed out of the finals as they had a district game commitment, so the rematch between the Generals and Ducks was on.
In the Sunday matinee final, the game went back and forth with the Ducks scoring and the Generals answering. With only 1:27 left in a 3-3 tied game, the Ducks missed a golden opportunity to put the game away by missing an open net goal when goalie and team co-Captain Andrew Lennox was down and out of position and the puck slid across the crease to an open Duck. The Duck player flubbed the shot wide, and overtime was on.
In overtime, the forward line of co-Captain Anthony Rechul and wings Phil Caris and Joey Hamilton went to work quickly. Getting the puck deep into the offensive zone, Rechul chased the puck into the corner and passed the puck to Joey Hamilton. Hamilton took a quick shot that was saved by the Ducks net minder. Unfortunately for the Ducks, the rebound came out to an unguarded Phil Caris who roofed the shot into the open net using only 15 seconds of overtime for his second game and second tournament winning goal this season.
The Generals had great offensive support from defensemen Jack Bauer, Hugh Comben and Brendan Morrison who combined for a total of 13 points in 4 games. Forwards Wes Sallee, Brooks Robertson, Sean Cushing also contributed to the effort. Andrew Lennox was the tournament MVP allowing only 6 goals in 4 games including one shutout.
The Generals go on the road to Cleveland for the final tourney of the season February 12, 13 and 14 before house playoffs begin in March.
