A note from our Board President, John Popma:
How many of you are aware that our association has former players that have made it to the NHL? Would you guess that the number of former players playing juniors, college, or minor league hockey is upwards of FIFTY players? I have followed and tracked local players for the 7 years I have been on the board, and we are definitely on the map when it comes to hockey.
I am proud to announce that we have established a Kensington Valley Hockey Association Alumni Committee as well as a “Where Hockey Begins” initiative. The main focus of this initiative is to embrace our role of bringing kids into the game and developing them to play at the next levels.
My goal of this initiative is to help highlight our past while fostering dreams and goals for the younger players. How cool will it be for our younger players to go to a game or watch on TV, and have a connection with some of those players! How cool will it be for our former players to have such an awesome fan base!
To assist in our efforts, we have partnered with Made in Michigan Hockey. Made in Michigan Hockey is a group of local players (many KVHA alum) who focuses on giving back to area youth through training and their elite summer league. When meeting with them, I was impressed that we hold the same values and goals to find ways to mentor the younger players!
Moving forward, here are some highlights of what we wish to accomplish:
· Establish a list of former players.
· Share and highlight player accomplishments on our website and through social media.
· Create a “Wall of Fame” at the rink to include photographs or jerseys of alumni players.
· Training and mentoring opportunities to unite our past and present players.
· Open a dialogue with former players and families to help guide others through the various decisions on their hockey path.
· Long term goals…chartered bus trips to watch alumni players and cheer them on.
If you are a former KVHA player who went on to play at higher levels, or know of someone who is, please reach out to us to be included. If you would be interested in helping with the committee or have any suggestions, please email email@example.com. We are just getting this off the ground and are excited to see what we can accomplish and find ways to have our area continue to be recognized for developing such amazing hockey players.
