The MAHA Player Development Committee has been meeting regularly to put a plan in place to hold Player Development Camps this year. While there are no guarantees, we are hopeful that we can move forward with this year’s events with minimal disruption.
There are a number of factors considered when choosing the dates and format for the camps. We took into consideration USA Hockey’s National Championships, the ensuing MAHA tryout dates, and the tentative dates for the USHL Combines and other events.
As a result, for the boys, the District Camps held in Dearborn, Lansing, and Marquette have been eliminated. Each age group will have a single weekend festival. It will be limited to eight teams per age group, and the number of skates per team is being reduced from four to three. In addition, the Bantam Camps at LSSU have been suspended.
These changes are for this year only.
Unfortunately, every player who wants to participate will not be able to do so, and the selection process for national-bound camps has been narrowed to only three on-ice sessions. We fully realize that this is not ideal, but we had to make some difficult decisions in order to put this year's camps in place. Due to the condensed nature of these events, we are adding extra evaluators this year to make sure players receive the proper assessment during the weekend.
Registration will open first for Tier 1 and MHSAA varsity players, followed by open registration for all other players 10 days later. One of the main purposes of these festivals is to send the best Michigan has to offer to National Development Camps, and opening registration first to Tier 1 and Varsity players gives them the best chance to register before their age group fills.
The Girls camp will remain similar to past years, but the dates have been moved to May.
The format for Team Michigan has been changed to only a single tryout per player, as well; it will give players the option of choosing one of three dates/locations. Again, the great majority of these changes are being implemented only for this year in response to the COVID situation.
